Why Audio Quality Matters in Video Production: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at STOKES Entertainment

When people think about professional video production, they often focus on the visuals: camera angles, lighting, composition, and editing. But one of the most important elements of a successful video is something viewers may not consciously notice until there's a problem. That element is audio quality.

Clear dialogue, intentional sound editing, and carefully selected music can significantly influence how an audience experiences a production.

At STOKES Entertainment, we believe audio deserves just as much attention as the visuals. A recent client project reminded us why.

When Client Feedback Highlights the Details

Following the completion of a recent private event production, we received feedback from a client who described the finished video as heartfelt.

She identified a meaningful portion of the production as her favorite and specifically praised the clarity of the audio, particularly because the ceremony took place outdoors.

That feedback was especially meaningful to our team.

Outdoor recording environments present challenges that aren't always present indoors. Wind, surrounding activity, and unpredictable background sounds can interfere with important moments.

For this production, our goal was to preserve the meaningful sounds of the event while creating a peaceful, beautiful, and majestic atmosphere through thoughtful editing and music selection.

Hearing that the client appreciated the finished result reinforced the value of those decisions.

Why Recording Multiple Audio Sources Matters

One of the most important practices in professional video production is capturing audio from more than one source whenever practical.

Different microphones and recording devices may perform differently depending on their placement, surrounding noise, and proximity to the person speaking.

Recording multiple sources gives an editor more options during post-production.

During the outdoor portion of our recent project, STOKES Entertainment had three audio sources available:

  • Audio from our stationary camera.

  • A shotgun mic mounted on our float cam.

  • A separate handheld audio recorder.

Although all three sources were available, that doesn't mean every recording was used in the finished production.

Instead, we evaluated the audio and selected the recordings that worked best for the moments we wanted to preserve.

Most of the natural audio retained in the final outdoor sequence came from the shotgun mic on our float cam. For one particular moment, approximately eight seconds of audio from the handheld recorder provided the better option.

This is one reason recording multiple sources can be valuable. The goal isn't necessarily to use every microphone. It's to have choices when those choices matter.

Improving Audio During Post-Production

Capturing audio is only part of the process.

During post-production, an editor evaluates the recordings, adjusts audio levels, and determines whether unwanted sounds need to be reduced.

For this project, STOKES Entertainment worked in post production to address selected background noises, including distracting hiss and environmental sounds.

The goal wasn't to eliminate every trace of the outdoor environment. It was to improve clarity while preserving the natural character of the important recordings.

Noise reduction is a useful tool, but it has limitations. Excessive processing can introduce unwanted artifacts or make voices sound unnatural.

That's why starting with usable recordings and making selective adjustments is often more effective than attempting to repair severely compromised audio.

How Music Helps Tell the Story

Professional audio isn't limited to dialogue and natural sound.

Music can play an equally important role in shaping the emotional direction of a production.

During our recent private event project, we wanted portions of the outdoor sequence to feel peaceful, beautiful, and majestic.

Rather than using every second of recorded location audio, we intentionally selected moments where music would better support the visuals and emotional tone.

For those portions, the original location audio was replaced with carefully selected music.

We incorporated existing compositions that complemented the atmosphere we wanted to establish. These pieces were not custom-composed for the production; they were selected because they supported the story we were telling.

This is an important distinction in video editing: sometimes the best audio decision is knowing when to preserve natural sound and when to let music carry the moment.

The Value of Intentional Production Decisions

Great video production isn't simply about owning professional equipment.

It's about understanding how to use available tools, recognizing potential challenges, and making thoughtful decisions throughout the production and editing process.

In our recent project, those decisions included recording multiple audio sources, selecting the strongest recordings, reducing distracting sounds, and using music to establish the appropriate emotional atmosphere.

Each decision served the same purpose: creating a finished production that respected the significance of the occasion.

The client's feedback was particularly rewarding because she highlighted a meaningful portion of the production, the very portion where we had invested considerable attention in the audio and overall presentation.

For our team, that was a meaningful reminder that details behind the scenes can make a difference in how viewers experience the final video.

Why Audio Quality Matters for Businesses and Special Events

Although this example comes from a private event, the principles apply to many types of video production.

For businesses, clear audio helps audiences understand interviews, presentations, testimonials, and brand messages.

For special events, thoughtful audio recording and editing help preserve speeches, ceremonies, and meaningful moments.

For documentary productions, sound can contribute to authenticity, atmosphere, and emotional connection.

Regardless of the project, professional audio planning helps support the larger goal of effective visual storytelling.

And while equipment plays an important role, the real value comes from knowing how to capture, evaluate, and use sound intentionally.
